As primary and secondary schools resume for first term of the 2022 academic year today, poor turnout of pupils and students has been observed in most public schools visited by our reporters.Learners have spent almost two years at home after the schools were closed due to outbreak of corona virus in March 2020.Bigira Charles the head teacher of Gisorora primary school said that 170 pupils have reported at school and they have started studies.He added that all teachers have reported.Kisoro Hill primary deputy head teacher Niyibizi Lauben said that eight pupils have reported at school.At Suma primary school in Nkuringo town council, less that 50 pupils were seen at the school at around 12:00pm.At Chuho primary school, the head teacher Mr. Habiyakare Wilson said that 60 pupils reported today.In December last year, the Ministry of Education said that learners in primary one to three that last studied in March 2020 when schools were closed will be promoted to the next classes primary 2, 3 and 4. Under the same arrangement, all children aged six who had not yet been enrolled into school before the lockdowns will be allowed to join primary one.However, the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni said all learners who will be promoted will have to undergo remedial classes to be able to catch up.
