KISORO: Death toll rises after massive floods in Nyarusiza sub county

At least eight people have died and many others displaced following  the worst floods Nyarusiza Sub County has seen.

The Nyarusiza sub county LC3 Chairperson Nsabimana Erasmus has this morning told this reporter that bodies of eight people have been recovered while others are still missing

He said that heavy destructions were reported in villages of Buzeyi, Rucantege,Rukeri and Nyagihenge villages in Rukongi parish, Nyarusiza sub county.

Nsabimana said four died in Koranya trading center, 2 in Kabaale village,2 Batwa in Rukeri village while others are still covered by debris.

Five people are still trapped in the demolished house of Kiiza Felisiano.

People who are still trapped are Muhawenimana Gerida,4 years old, Ngabire Ivan 2yrs old all children of Felesiano,Uwizeyimana Claudine,30 years old from Rwanda a tenant,Ntizandekura male of 5 years old son of Uwizeyimana and Iradukunda Joshua 11 years old son to Nsenga John.

Houses  in Rukeri village ,Koranya trading center and other sorrounding areas have been burried by debris.No vehicle can access the the area at this time. Security has advised people to use hoes,pickaxes,sped and dig away the mud in order to retrieve the trapped bodies

Water started flowing from Mount Muhabura at around 4:00pm after rain where debris and boulders were brought by water into houses and gardens.

People started fleeing houses but some failed because water had already submerged their homes.

Sebutizi the LC1 chairperson of Mwanjari village said that they are carrying out a search for suspected missing people this morning.

The floods are flowing to sooko in Ntarama village where people have also fled their homes.

Emmanuel Nizeyimana the LC2 chairperson of Sooko parish said that people slept outside on raised grounds after their houses were filled by water and stones.

UPDF,RDC and other sister security agencies are on ground to help in the search of the missing people.

People have asked the government to help them with excavator to search for people who still covered by soil.Roads have been cutoff by heaps of stones.
