Thousands of refugees fleeing the latest flare-up in
Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday 29th March 2022 crossed into
Uganda and more are expected while tension remains high in the entire Rutshuru
territory in North Kivu.
As of now
many are stranded along the road, house verandas, and schools while others are
being transported to Nyakabande transit camp.
On
Tuesday afternoon there was exchange of gunfire between the Democratic Republic
of Congo’s forces and M23 rebels near the border and this caused many
businesses to close.
Meanwhile,
security at the Bunagana border has captured several M23 rebels, according to
security sources.
A source
that asked for anonymity to speak to the media revealed that several M23 rebels
have so far been captured and are being kept in unknown places.
The
captured rebels were seen being bundled on UPDF pickup
Again a
source in Gatwe village,Gitowa ward in Bunagana town council says one refugee
has been hit by a stray bullet as he was going to get his calf shortly after
leaving where he was camping in Uganda.
In an
interview with the media, the Kigezi regional Police spokesperson called for
vigilance among the members of the Public. He advised members of Bunagana Town
Council to flee to safer places until security returns to normal.
He cautioned
criminals against any acts of criminality saying that the law will take its
course.
Meanwhile
the situation at Bunagana border is cooling down following several shoot outs
from 1pm to 5pm.
