The Kisoro district
covid-19 Taskforce has threatened to close schools whose learners and teachers
will be found not wearing facemasks during inspections after one case of
covid-19 was confirmed in one school in Kisoro Municipality on Wednesday 2nd.
During a second District
Task Force meeting for kisoro district in 2022 on Wednesday, the Kisoro
Municipal town clerk, Sharifa Nakintu expressed worry over limited observation
of standard operating procedures among schools despite receiving the 1.5
million shillings to enforce SOPs.
In his report to the Task
Force, the Kisoro Municipal health officer, Dr.Benon Nkomeje noted that mass
testing among municipal schools started today and by press time Real Quality
had been confirmed to have three positive cases.
The Kisoro Muncipal town
clerk Sharif Nakintu requested for strong and decisive measures to be put up by
the Task Force to control covid-19 spread among schools. She noted that schools
should utilize well the 1.5 million shillings that was given to them to enforce
covid-19.
She also requested that
covid-19 testing be carried out among all schools in the district to ascertain
the depth of the infection among learners.
The Kisoro district
health officer, Nsabiyumva Steven said that Covid-19 testing among schools in
the district will begin soon. He however said that the district has not
recorded any covid-19 case from the public for two weeks. He noted that the
recent covid-19 tests were made on 31st January 2022 where nine
people were tested and zero cases were recorded while six were discharged.
He noted that the
cumulative cases in the district since March 2020 is at 1582 out of 1759 tests
made while 1242 have recovered from the disease with only 30 deaths being
recorded.
He said that the disease
is being controlled in the district but the public need to remain vigilant,
wearing facemasks and hand washing being top on the agenda.
Dr. Nsabiyumva also
noted that over 129,000 people have been vaccinated against covid-19 disease
out of a target population of 148,000 people, 95% coverage of the district’s
target population of people above 18 years of age.
He noted Kisoro district
will soon receive Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, Pfizer for learners between the
age of 12 and 18 while Moderna is for people taking their second dozes because
the ministry has not authorized a mixture of vaccines yet.
While chairing the DTF
meeting on Wednesday 2nd February 2, 2022, the deputy RDC Ndikumwami
Dan said that teachers who were not vaccinated will be arrested soon. He
advised those who were vaccinated to always move with their vaccination
cards.
